A 40-year-old woman, Aleya Bhawal, succumbed to injuries allegedly caused by prolonged mental and physical abuse inflicted by her husband and in-laws. Her husband, Arindam, has been arrested following a police complaint lodged by a family member.
The case, registered at Entally Police Station, includes charges of dowry torture, cruelty by husband, and causing death by negligence, police said.
According to the FIR filed by Arpita Mondal, a relative of Aleya, the deceased had been suffering abuse at the hands of her husband and his accomplices for an extended period. The complaint states that the abuse intensified earlier this week, resulting in fever and breathing difficulties on Tuesday.
Aleya was initially treated at NRS Medical College, but her condition worsened, and she was transferred to Apollo Hospitals, where she died at 9:35 am on Wednesday, police officials confirmed.
Arindam has been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway to determine the extent of involvement of other family members.
The tragic case has reignited concerns over domestic violence and dowry-related crimes, issues that continue to plague many households across India.
