A man was arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing gold jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh from a woman at the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Integrated Bus Terminus in Trichy. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday while the victim was waiting for her bus.
The victim, V Thilaga, a jewel appraiser from Chennai, had travelled to Trichy to visit relatives. While waiting at the bus terminus, the accused, identified as R Anwar (34), a resident of Samaspiran Street, reportedly stole her bag containing a 16-gram gold chain and a 5-gram gold ring before boarding a bus heading towards Chathiram bus stand.
However, his suspicious behaviour caught the attention of the bus crew, who promptly apprehended him. Meanwhile, Thilaga approached the police and filed a complaint.
Based on her complaint, a case was registered at Edamalaipatti Pudur police station under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police later arrested Anwar and recovered the stolen bag along with the jewellery. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
