Anthony Torres, 21, Arrested for Two Maine Shootings

Alleged domestic abuser linked to Auburn and Norway gunfire

by Amelia Crawford

AUBURN, MAINE — A 21-year-old man, Anthony Torres, was arrested by Auburn police in connection with two separate shooting incidents that occurred within one week, authorities announced Wednesday.

The first shooting was reported around 8:43 p.m. on Sept. 10 near Willow and Hampshire Streets in Auburn. Residents reported hearing gunfire, though police initially couldn’t confirm whether the sounds were gunshots or vehicle backfires.

However, the next morning, Auburn Police’s Proactive Community Enforcement (PACE) Unit returned to the scene, and with help from residents, confirmed that the sounds were indeed gunshots.

As the investigation unfolded, officers discovered that a second, unreported shooting had taken place days earlier in Norway, Maine — and Anthony Torres was suspected in both incidents. This led to Norway Police joining the ongoing investigation.

Torres, who was already on probation for violating a protection order, was taken into custody one week after the Auburn incident with the help of the Maine Department of Corrections’ Probation and Parole Division.

Charges filed against Torres include:

Domestic violence reckless conduct with a firearm

Reckless conduct with a firearm

Illegal possession of a firearm

Authorities say additional charges are expected based on the Norway shooting.

Police have not released further details about either shooting, including whether anyone was injured.
