Anthony Shimque, 42, has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting to stealing around £40,000 worth of goods from a BP petrol station in Essex. Shimque, who resides in Ilford, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court in October, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of theft and seven counts of non-dwelling burglary with intent to steal.

On Thursday, Shimque was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, for the seven non-dwelling burglary offences. Additionally, for the three theft charges, he received a nine-month sentence, also suspended for two years. These sentences will run concurrently.

A four-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) was also imposed, banning Shimque from entering two specific BP garages in Debden and Ilford. The order also prohibits him from entering any store while wearing a face covering or without the means to pay for items.

The thefts occurred between June 19 and October 20, 2024, during which Shimque repeatedly targeted the BP Garage in Debden Broadway. In total, 10 separate incidents were reported, involving the theft of food, cigarettes, and other items, all valued at approximately £40,000.

An investigation led to Shimque’s arrest on suspicion of business burglary. Evidence showed that he had stolen goods directly from shelves and even filled bags with cigarettes from behind the counter.

Sergeant Jamie Shepherd emphasized the impact of such crimes on local businesses, stating, “We work hard to ensure criminals who steal from stores are brought to justice. The Criminal Behaviour Order is crucial in reducing further crime.”

BP’s support in gathering evidence was vital to securing the conviction.
