DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A Lexington man has been charged with multiple fraud-related offenses following a weeks-long investigation by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, authorities announced.

According to sheriff’s officials, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division began investigating a suspected fraud case in Lexington on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026. As the investigation progressed, Anthony Gene Everhart, 23, was identified as a suspect.

Everhart was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, and charged with seven counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and four counts of identity theft. Investigators allege the charges are connected to fraudulent activity uncovered during the investigation, though officials did not release specific details about the alleged scheme.

Court records indicate Everhart was issued a $5,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to make his first appearance in Davidson County District Court on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office noted that bond amounts and release conditions are determined by the judicial system, not law enforcement, in accordance with North Carolina General Statute 15A-532.

Officials emphasized that Everhart is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the Davidson County judicial system, and no additional arrests have been announced.

Authorities encourage residents with information related to fraud or identity theft cases to contact the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
