IOWA CITY, Iowa – 44-year-old Antavis Watson has been charged with first-degree murder after a fatal shooting that occurred in Iowa City last weekend. Watson, who was booked into the Johnson County Jail late Tuesday night, also faces charges of attempted murder and dominion/control of a firearm by a felon.

Iowa City Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1800-block of South Gilbert Street just before midnight on Saturday. Upon arrival, investigators discovered Elijah Williams had been shot and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), where he later died from his injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, Watson approached a vehicle occupied by two individuals and fired multiple rounds into the car. One of the occupants of the vehicle reported feeling in fear for their life during the incident.

Further investigation revealed that Watson and Williams had a history of conflict, with data from Williams’ phone showing the two had been feuding.

Watson remains in custody as the investigation continues, with the charges reflecting the seriousness of the crime and the ongoing concerns over gun violence in the area.
