In a significant development in the Andaman and Nicobar State Cooperative Bank Ltd (ANSCBL) loan scam case, bank director K. Subramanian and tour operator M Sajid were arrested on Monday night, police confirmed.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jitendra Kumar Meena said that both individuals were taken into custody and will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Port Blair later today.
This brings the total number of arrests in the case to seven, including ANSCBL managing director K. Murugan. Subramanian, a resident of Maccapahad, and Sajid, from Junglighat, are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The scam surfaced when it was revealed that loans were sanctioned in violation of standard procedures. Police allege that the bank’s managing committee bypassed CIBIL reports and mandatory documentation, ignoring the loan screening committee’s recommendations.
In an earlier development, an FIR was lodged on May 15 against Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the bank’s vice-chairman and a former Congress MP, for his alleged involvement in the irregularities.
Investigators have also traced suspicious money trails to unrelated individuals, including a driver, a tea stall owner, and a mechanic, suggesting wider misuse of banking channels.
