In a swift response, Silchar police arrested two youths for allegedly stealing ornaments and damaging an idol at a Shani Mandir near the National Highway in the early hours of August 16.

During a press briefing on Sunday, Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta confirmed that police received reports of a theft and partial vandalism at the temple. The incident involved the theft of jewellery and damage to the idol of Shanidev.

Forensic, fingerprint, and technical analyses were conducted at the scene. Meanwhile, a brief road blockade by a group of people protesting the desecration was quickly dispersed by police.

Following investigation, police arrested Anik Das (27) and Pallab Das (26) as the prime accused. During interrogation, the stolen items were recovered, which included:

One gold chain

A gold eye from the idol

Two silver bracelets

SSP Mahatta praised the coordination between investigation teams and forensic experts in bringing the culprits to justice. Authorities are continuing efforts to ensure security at local temples and religious sites.
