Chicago, IL – A 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection with multiple mail theft incidents on Chicago’s Northwest Side. Authorities say Andrew Trotter was taken into custody on September 15 after a joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Chicago Police Department.

Trotter was allegedly found in possession of:

Two counterfeit U.S. Postal Service keys

Suspected methamphetamine

Multiple stolen debit and credit cards

A stolen passport

Following his arrest, he was charged with:

One felony count of possession of burglary tools

One felony count of possession of a controlled substance

One misdemeanor count of theft of mislaid property

One misdemeanor count of possession of burglary tools

Officials believe Trotter is responsible for a string of mail thefts that occurred in early 2025 in neighborhoods across the city’s Northwest Side.

Federal Response

Ruth M. Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, said in a statement:

“This arrest is a statement that mail theft will not be tolerated, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. The Postal Inspection Service will continue to partner with other law enforcement agencies to collectively pursue criminals who victimize postal customers.”

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on mail theft and identity-related crimes, which have seen a rise in recent years due to the increased value of personal information and banking details found in the mail.
