MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 19-year-old Memphis man, Andrew Lopez, has been charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect after police say his two-month-old son sustained severe injuries that will affect him for life.
On May 15, officers responded to a home on Boxdale Street in Parkway Village and found the baby unresponsive. The child was rushed to Baptist Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
Doctors discovered multiple traumatic injuries, including:
A fractured clavicle
Bleeding on the brain
Bruising on the face
Retinal hemorrhaging
The infant was later transferred to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where additional injuries were detected. Medical staff stated the child now requires a feeding tube and will suffer lifelong complications due to the extent of the trauma.
According to police, both parents were interviewed but could not explain the injuries. Lopez, identified as the baby’s father, was booked into jail on Wednesday, and as of now, no bond has been set. While the mother was named in the police report, she has not been charged, per current court records.
Medical professionals confirmed that the injuries were consistent with physical abuse.
