In a swift move, Andheri police have arrested two men accused of breaking into a home in Anand Nagar, Marol, Andheri East and stealing gold ornaments valued at around Rs 8 lakh while the family was away at the hospital for a childbirth.
The incident occurred on July 5, when Simpi, the pregnant sister of homeowner Vinay Suresh Upadhyay, began experiencing labour pains. The family rushed her to the hospital, where she delivered a baby boy that night. Meanwhile, the house was broken into, with the burglary captured on the society’s CCTV cameras.
The family returned early on July 6 to find the main door lock broken and their gold missing from a locker. Vinay said, “We locked the house before leaving. When we came back, the lock was broken and all our gold valuables were gone — including my sister’s wedding jewellery and gifts from her baby shower.”
Police arrested Mohammad Ali Gulamnabi Shaikh (52) and Akbar Ali Fateh Mohamad Sain (31), known repeat offenders. The duo allegedly locked neighbouring homes from outside to avoid detection while committing the crime.
An officer said, “The accused are habitual offenders who ensured all adjacent houses were locked from the outside before the burglary. We are working to recover the stolen gold, and the investigation is ongoing.”
