In a major crackdown in 2025, the Amritsar Police Commissionerate, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Rajasthan Police, dismantled an international drug syndicate involved in trans-border heroin trafficking. Over 60 kilograms of heroin were seized near the international border with Pakistan in Barmer, Rajasthan.

The interstate operation spanned Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals, including a woman. Those arrested from Amritsar district include Gursahib Singh, Jashanpreet Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Parshotam Singh, Gagandeep Singh, and Rajinder Kaur.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav revealed that the drug cartel was run by notorious Pakistan-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based Indian handler Joban Kaler. The syndicate was involved in large-scale heroin smuggling using hawala channels.

DGP Yadav stated on social media, “The massive operation recovered 60.302 kg of heroin near the International Border in Barmer, Rajasthan. The arrested include key smugglers and hawala racketeers. Investigation is ongoing to unravel the network’s entire chain, and more arrests are expected.”
