The Patna cyber police have busted a major cybercrime ring with the arrest of two key suspects accused of running a fake bank loan scam that defrauded victims across India, particularly in the southern states. The accused, Amit Kumar (25) from Nawada and Rahul Kumar (22) from Sheikhpura, were arrested from Rajendra Nagar in Patna on Friday.
According to City SP (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh, the duo had been operating the scam for 2 to 3 years, distributing pamphlets and posting online ads that lured people with offers of low-interest personal loans. Claiming to represent a prominent national bank, they issued toll-free numbers and impersonated bank officials to build credibility.
Victims who responded were sent WhatsApp links requesting personal and banking details for “loan processing.” The fraudsters then used this sensitive information to illegally access and drain the victims’ bank accounts.
The arrests followed a complaint filed by a victim from South India. During the operation, police seized:
19 mobile phones
1 laptop
15 ATM cards
Rs 4,500 in cash
This case highlights the growing menace of fake app-based financial frauds, and cyber police are continuing their probe to trace other accomplices in the network.
