Alva Jones Sentenced for DUI Crash That Killed Man

Charleston man receives max sentence for fatal and injury DUIs

by Sophia Bennett

A Charleston man has received the maximum sentence for DUI-related offenses following a deadly 2024 crash in Kanawha County.

Alva Jones, 46, was sentenced Monday to 3–15 years in prison and fined $4,000 for DUI causing death and DUI causing bodily injury, according to the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The sentencing stems from a multi-vehicle crash along U.S. 119 North in November 2024, investigated by South Charleston police. The crash resulted in the death of Donald Cantrell and injuries to a female passenger.

Investigators found that Jones was driving under the influence of amphetamines and methamphetamine while his license was suspended. He had pled guilty to the charges in late 2025.
