Goa: Authorities in Goa have arrested Alexei Leonov, 37, a Russian national, following the alleged murder of two Russian women in Pernem taluka’s coastal areas.
The case first came to light after police discovered the body of Leonov’s live-in partner, Elena Kasthanova, 37, in their rented accommodation in Arambol on Thursday night. Her body showed signs of struggle, including tied hands and visible injuries.
While initially investigating Kasthanova’s death, police uncovered that another Russian woman, Elina Vaneeva, was also a victim. Vaneeva, a mutual friend of Leonov and Kasthanova, had been in Goa for about a month and was reportedly killed around January 14–15. Investigators found similarities in the methods of both murders, suggesting a possible connection.
According to witness accounts, an argument erupted between Leonov and Kasthanova prior to her death. Leonov reportedly asked a neighboring Russian woman to intervene, but she refused. The situation escalated, and Kasthanova’s screams were heard by the neighbor. By the time she reached the room, Leonov had jumped from the first-floor balcony and fled.
Authorities are now examining Leonov’s background and any potential links to prior criminal activity. The local expatriate community, especially Russian tourists, remains shaken by the shocking incident. Police continue to collect evidence to determine the motive behind the alleged double homicide.
