LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Laredo police are investigating a shooting that left a 31-year-old man dead over the weekend, marking the city’s second homicide in less than a month.

Alberto Cantu, 28, is currently being held at the Webb County Jail for allegedly shooting and killing Angel Morales early Sunday morning, February 9. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 200 block of East Saunders.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Morales with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced him dead. Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit worked quickly and identified Cantu as a suspect. Less than 12 hours later, Cantu was arrested.

Jose Espinoza with Laredo Police confirmed that investigators are still working to piece together the details of what led up to the shooting. “There’s more to this homicide, this is an active investigation. Officers are still cooperating on this case and speaking to possible witnesses,” he said. Police also confirmed that the shooting took place at a business, and they are continuing to interview anyone who may have seen what happened.

Authorities found several pieces of evidence, including the weapon allegedly used in the shooting. Cantu was brought in for questioning and charged with murder after his arrest.

Neighbors, who chose to remain off-camera, mentioned previous issues with violence and criminal activity in the area, raising concerns about the neighborhood’s safety.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather more information and evidence related to this tragic event.
