In a major drug bust, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested two men after seizing more than 20 kilograms of ganja worth Rs5.18 lakh at Kalyan railway station in Thane district.

The suspects, Akmal Khan Mohammad Yamin Khan (30) and Abid Majid Shaikh (23), both residents of Mumbra, were intercepted by a GRP patrol team on Friday evening after disembarking from the Bhubaneswar–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Superfast Express.

Suspicious of their behavior, the officers conducted a search and discovered 20.685 kg of ganja concealed in their luggage, said Senior Police Inspector Vijay Khedekar.

The duo was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the contraband may have been sourced from outside Maharashtra, and police are now working to uncover the supply chain and identify potential interstate links and intended recipients of the illegal substance.

“The investigation is ongoing to trace the origin and destination of the seized ganja. We suspect a wider network,” Khedekar added.
