A joint team from the Sarpatha police station and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) arrested Akhilesh, aged 35, on Sunday night for the brutal killing of his father, Prabhakar Singh, aged 65, following a monetary dispute. The arrest was made after Akhilesh confessed to the crime, which took place in Deeh Ashrafabad on Friday.
Jaunpur SP Kaustubh confirmed that Akhilesh was taken into custody after admitting to striking his father with a stick during a heated argument. The police also recovered the weapon used in the crime, which was a stick.
The investigation revealed that Prabhakar had recently sold a piece of family land to some buyers. The father and son began discussing the money earned from the sale, which quickly escalated into a violent argument. During the altercation, Akhilesh struck his father on the head with the stick, causing his death.
In an attempt to mislead the authorities, Akhilesh changed his clothes and spent 2-3 hours at a roadside dhaba (food outlet) before returning home around 1 am. On Saturday morning, he went about his day as usual, going to work and later reporting his father’s murder to the police around 12:30 pm.
The police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the killing and are questioning Akhilesh further about the events leading up to the tragedy.
