In a significant breakthrough, the Mumbai Police have arrested Ahmed Mohammed Shafi Shaikh, alias Akbar Khau, a wanted accused from Odisha, in connection with a mephedrone trafficking case. The accused is a habitual offender with a record of involvement in at least 18 serious criminal cases, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The operation was conducted by the Ghatkopar Unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) following the arrest of Farid Shaikh, who was caught with 64 grams of mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant popularly known as meow-meow or MCAT. During interrogation, Farid revealed that his supplier was Ahmed Shafi, prompting investigators to launch a manhunt.
Police discovered that Shafi had recently been released from jail after serving a sentence under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Soon after his release, he reportedly resumed drug peddling and became an active member of a mephedrone distribution chain operating across states.
Acting on precise intelligence, an ANC team tracked him down to Sundargarh in western Odisha. The accused was brought to Mumbai and produced in court, which remanded him to police custody until November 7.
Officials said further investigation is underway to uncover the broader network behind the illegal narcotics trade.
