A young Agniveer soldier, Abhishek, posted in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, became the victim of a digital scam shortly after arriving in Delhi. On May 18, near Metro Gate No. 4 of the New Delhi Railway Station, Abhishek was approached by a man claiming he had lost his phone and wallet.

In a gesture of kindness, Abhishek lent the stranger his mobile phone. But in a matter of moments, the man accessed Abhishek’s UPI app and transferred Rs82,496 to multiple bank accounts before fleeing with the device.

According to DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan, a case was registered at Daryaganj Police Station, and a special team was formed to investigate. CCTV footage and UPI transaction traces led police to uncover an organized cybercrime ring operating under fake firms.

On May 28, police arrested the prime accused, Sahil Verma (24) of Sonipat, near Ajmal Khan Park, Karol Bagh. He confessed to running a shell company and creating fraudulent bank accounts to siphon off funds.

The next day, his accomplice Deepak Jain alias Naveen (33) from Ajmer, Rajasthan, was caught in Chittorgarh. Five mobile phones and several passbooks were recovered, confirming the duo’s involvement in UPI fraud and money laundering.

Police confirmed the two are part of a larger cyber fraud network, and raids are underway to track two more suspects and recover the rest of the stolen money.
