The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested and repatriated Acar Huseyin, a 61-year-old Turkish national who fled his country after being convicted of fraud, officials announced on Tuesday.
According to Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, Huseyin was convicted earlier this year by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court. He reportedly left Turkey soon after the ruling to evade a prison sentence of 14 years, eight months, and 10 days. His escape route took him through several Middle Eastern countries before he ultimately arrived in Nigeria.
Hundeyin said that in July 2025, INTERPOL NCB Ankara issued a Red Notice, asking member nations to locate and detain the fugitive. Acting on the request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja launched discreet, intelligence-driven operations that led to Huseyin’s arrest in Abuja.
After completing all necessary documentation and working with international law-enforcement partners, Nigerian authorities repatriated Huseyin to Istanbul, where he will begin serving his sentence.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun praised the INTERPOL unit for its professionalism, reaffirming that Nigeria will not serve as a refuge for fugitives or escaped convicts. He emphasized the NPF’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and combating transnational crime.
