TORONTO — Toronto Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a credit card fraud investigation involving multiple victims.
Authorities say Abdel Madjid Benmaou allegedly posed as a bank employee to defraud individuals in two separate incidents.
In the first case on October 1, 2025, a victim in the Cosburn Avenue and Pape Avenue area received a call from Benmaou, who claimed their credit card had been compromised. He arranged for a courier to collect the card, which was later used to make $11,000 in purchases at a jewellery store in Mississauga.
A second incident occurred on October 3, 2025, when another victim in the East Mall and Evans Avenue area received a similar call. Benmaou again used a courier to obtain the credit card, which was used to make $14,000 in purchases at a Mississauga jewellery store.
Benmaou faces multiple charges, including:
Two counts of False Pretenses
Three counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
Three counts of Possess/Use Credit Card Obtained by Offence
Three counts of Unauthorized Use of Credit Card Data
Two counts of Fraud Over $5,000
One count of Fraud Under $5,000
Two counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 9 a.m.
Police warn that there may be additional victims and have released an image of the accused. Authorities remind the public that scammers often impersonate banks or other organizations, and anyone suspecting account compromise should immediately contact their financial institution.
