Vadodara police’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) arrested 29-year-old Aarif Dewan, a resident of Karodiya Road, for stealing six two-wheelers across the city to pay off gambling debts.
Police said the arrest followed a tip-off about a man riding a two-wheeler without a license plate in the Fatehgunj area. Dewan was intercepted on a non-geared scooter, and when asked for ownership documents, he failed to provide any proof. Investigations revealed the scooter had been stolen a few days earlier.
Upon further interrogation, Dewan admitted to stealing six scooters from Gorwa, Fatehgunj, Sayajigunj, Navayard, and Harni over the past few months. He reportedly pawned the stolen vehicles for amounts ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 32,000 to settle gambling debts. Police said Dewan’s modus operandi involved targeting newly parked scooters in residential areas and using duplicate keys to steal them.
Dewan is a history-sheeter, with nine previous offenses registered against him: five for vehicle theft and four related to gambling. Authorities have taken him into custody pending further investigation.
