by Amelia Crawford

Police have named an elderly woman who died after being struck by a vehicle in an Asda car park in Oldham, as officers urgently work to trace her family.

Margaret Crichton, 78, was hit while walking through the supermarket car park on Greenfield Lane on Tuesday evening. She had been carrying her shopping back to her car when the collision occurred shortly before 7pm.

Greater Manchester Police said the vehicle involved was a Peugeot Express van that was travelling towards the car park exit at the time of the incident. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Margaret died at the scene.

Her name was released in an appeal to help officers locate her next of kin. Police believe she may have family connections in Manchester or Yorkshire.

The van’s driver, a 35-year-old man, has been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.

Several emergency vehicles attended the scene, and part of the car park was cordoned off while officers carried out enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact Greater Manchester Police.
