MADERA COUNTY, Calif. — Leticia Mariscal, 55, a former benefits eligibility worker, has been arrested for allegedly stealing over $40,000 in CalFresh benefits.
Investigators said Mariscal used the identities of more than 15 people, including elderly and deceased individuals, to carry out the scheme. U.S. Attorney Eric Grant stated that Mariscal accessed county databases from December 2020 to April 2025, approving benefits in others’ names, printing EBT cards, and using the funds herself.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, with support from the Madera County District Attorney’s Office, conducted the investigation.
If convicted, Mariscal could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for theft, with an additional two years for identity theft.
