Rene Gomez Jr. Sentenced for Edward Geouge III Killing

Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter in 2021 Death

by Sophia Bennett

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Rene Oscar Gomez Jr. has been sentenced for the 2021 killing of Edward Geouge III, whose death was initially investigated as a single-vehicle crash.

Gomez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea deal with the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office. He received a sentence of 94 to 125 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began on June 9, 2021, when the North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a crash on Saw Road, where Geouge was found dead. The following day, detectives were notified that Geouge had actually died from a gunshot wound, not the crash.

Gomez was arrested on June 15, 2021, and has been held at Rowan County Jail since his arrest.
