CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with a fatal street racing crash in Cape Coral that killed 75-year-old William J. Garfall.
On January 10, a white Ford Mustang and a blue Honda Accord were captured on surveillance racing along Del Prado Boulevard near Northeast Pine Island Road. Garfall was driving a red Chevrolet Equinox and attempted a left turn into a business plaza when the Mustang struck the passenger side of his vehicle. The impact caused the Mustang to spin into another car before stopping.
Witnesses reported the Honda Accord made a U-turn and slowed as it passed the scene before fleeing. A witness followed the vehicle, helping police identify the driver.
Garfall was transported to a hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Neighbor Maureen said the area has a history of street racing.
Investigators determined the Mustang was traveling 99.4 mph in a 45 mph zone, with both cars exceeding 90 mph at the time of the incident.
On Monday, police arrested Milano Paolo Hlavina, 18, driver of the Mustang, and Jeremy Olivo, 19, driver of the Honda Accord. Both face vehicular homicide charges.
