CANTON, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A tragic hit-and-run accident in Canton has left a 79-year-old woman dead after she was struck by an Amazon delivery truck on Tuesday evening. According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene of the accident off Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The victim, Sandra Fitts, was killed when the vehicle hit her while she was crossing the road to visit a cemetery where her family members are buried. Fitts and her husband had recently sold their nearby home, but they continued to return at night to feed wild cats in the area.
Deputies soon determined that the vehicle involved was likely an Amazon delivery truck after evidence from the scene suggested as much. While responding to the accident, a deputy observed an Amazon truck turning onto Bishop Drive, prompting a search for the vehicle.
The truck, driven by London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was later found on Bishop Drive, with damage matching the evidence found at the accident scene. Best, who had continued his delivery route after the incident, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree and hit-and-run resulting in death.
Amazon released a statement expressing sadness over the incident, extending condolences to the victim’s family, and stating they would cooperate with local law enforcement during the investigation. The company also confirmed that Best would no longer be working on behalf of Amazon.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jay Baker emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that had Best remained at the scene, he likely wouldn’t have faced the serious charges he now faces.
“This is a terrible situation, but had he not left the scene, it’s very likely he would not have been charged, certainly not with these felonies,” Baker said.
