Mumbai police have arrested a woman bank sales manager and her husband for allegedly creating a fake season pass for the Mumbai suburban railway using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, officials said Thursday.
The incident came to light on November 26 when a ticket checker noticed irregularities during a routine inspection of an AC local train traveling from Kalyan to Dadar. The woman, identified as 28-year-old Gudiya Omkar Sharma, was unable to open her season pass through the official Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile app. Instead, she presented a pass via a Google Chrome link, and the QR code was non-functional.
Ticket checker Vishal Tukaram Navle grew suspicious and contacted the Central Railway helpline to verify the pass. Authorities confirmed that the pass had expired in February and was registered under a male name — Omkar Sharma, her husband.
Following the discovery, both Gudiya and 30-year-old Omkar Sharma were detained. During questioning, Omkar admitted to using his coding skills and AI tools to create the sophisticated counterfeit pass.
The Kalyan railway police subsequently registered a case against the couple under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing sections 318 (4) for cheating, 336(2) and 336(3) for forgery, 340 for using forged documents electronically, and 3(5) for acting with common intention.
