Mother gets closure four years after child’s death

More than four years after her infant was tragically assaulted and killed, a Malaysian mother has finally received a measure of closure with the sentencing of the man responsible.

On Nov. 21, the Shah Alam High Court sentenced 40-year-old Mohamed Badruldin Mohamed, the husband of the baby’s nanny, to 30 years in prison and 13 strokes of the cane. He pleaded guilty to causing the death of the nine-month-old child on April 27, 2021, at a public housing project in Lembah Subang, Petaling Jaya.

After the sentencing, the child’s mother, Robiatul Adawiah Aziz, expressed her anguish in a Facebook post, calling the act cruel and saying the tragedy had left her world “dark.”

Investigators had found forensic evidence linking Badruldin to the crime, including DNA results that ultimately led him to change his initial plea of not guilty. Malaysian media, including The Star, reported that the baby’s cause of death was smothering.

Badruldin’s sentence will be counted from the date of his arrest on April 29, 2021.
