TOLEDO, Ohio — An Ohio man has been charged with the murder of a 27-year-old man after authorities discovered the victim’s body parts in the vehicle he was driving.

Martel Huggins, 33, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the killing of Malicai Calder, who was first reported missing last Saturday, according to the Toledo Police Department.

Police said officers stopped Huggins while he was driving Calder’s work vehicle on Mulberry Street. Inside, they discovered parts of Calder’s body. Police affidavits indicate that Calder had suffered gunshot and stab wounds to the head. The coroner confirmed the death as a homicide.

Authorities were investigating Calder’s disappearance when they stopped Huggins. The address under investigation was also Huggins’ home. Officials have not disclosed a motive or events leading to the killing.

Friends reported Calder had not been seen or heard from since Nov. 15. Officers had previously visited Calder’s apartment for a check safety call on Nov. 21, noting the shower running, TV on, and a dog barking, but detected no foul odors.

The Northwood Police Department also responded to a safety call on Nov. 18 after Calder’s vehicle was reported missing.

Huggins faces charges of murder and felonious assault, and a judge set his bond at $1 million. He is expected in court again in December.
