Akhil Shaikh Held in Rs5.72 Lakh Mumbai Investment Scam

Four-member gang duped victim with stock returns promise

by Ananya Mehta

The Oshiwara Police have arrested four men for running an online investment scam that cheated a Mumbai resident of Rs5.72 lakh after falsely promising to double his money through stock-market trading.

The case began when complainant Raju Madan Mohan Chhibber received a call from an unknown number on September 20. The caller convinced him to invest in a scheme that claimed to offer 100% returns. Trusting the pitch, the victim transferred money over several days before realising he had been tricked.

During the investigation, police traced part of the defrauded amount to a Bank of Baroda account registered under Sameer Enterprises, operated by Mohammad Akhil Shaikh of Dharavi. Technical surveillance of linked phone numbers led officers to Akhil, who was detained on Dharavi’s 90 Feet Road.

His interrogation exposed the involvement of two associates — Vijaykumar Sarbatjeetprasad Patel and Rajendra Balwant Vidhate — both of whom were detained at Thane Railway Station. The three were arrested on November 22 and remanded in police custody by the Bandra Holiday Court.

Further inquiry revealed the gang created multiple fraudulent bank accounts using fake company names. These account kits — containing debit cards, passwords and cheque books — were passed to a fourth member, Akshay Ashok Kanse, who was later arrested in Ghatkopar’s Barve Nagar and remanded by the Railway Mobile Court in Andheri.

Police stated that the group targeted victims by promising high returns through manipulated stock-market schemes and funnelled the money through fake accounts.

The arrested men are:

Mohammad Akhil Shaikh (32) – Dharavi

Vijaykumar Sarbatjeetprasad Patel (32) – Siwan, Bihar

Rajendra Balwant Vidhate (50) – Nashik Road

Akshay Ashok Kanse (33) – Ghatkopar West

The operation was led by Sub-inspector Prabhat Mankar with cyber team support under senior Oshiwara Division officers.
