The Jalandhar police have secured a nine-day remand of Harminder Singh Rimpy (45) in connection with the attempted sexual assault and murder of a teenage girl in the Basti Bawa Khel area on Saturday evening.
Rimpy was admitted to Civil Hospital following his arrest as he sustained grievous injuries after being thrashed by angry residents of the locality. He was later produced before the duty magistrate.
According to police, Rimpy attempted to hide the victim’s body in his washroom for over six hours, keeping away the victim’s mother, brother, neighbors, and even the police, claiming she had not visited his house that evening. Neighbors eventually recovered the body in the presence of police, after which Rimpy was severely beaten by the locals, making it difficult for officers to take him into custody.
Details from the post-mortem report regarding sexual assault or strangulation with a rope or wire have not been released.
Following the incident, BJP leader Jai Inder Kaur, president of the Mahila Morcha, visited the victim’s home to express condolences. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur also met the victim’s mother and assured justice, stating that any negligent officers would face action. Several SHOs were shuffled to ensure active investigation and avoid complacency.
Meanwhile, ABVP women activists, led by lawyer Tamanna, protested at Dr BR Ambedkar Chowk and visited the victim’s home, demanding the dismissal of officers who failed to trace the girl in time despite CCTV evidence indicating her presence at Rimpy’s house. Activists stated that early recovery could have saved her life.
The investigation into this heinous crime is ongoing, with authorities pledging full accountability and justice for the victim and her family.
