HALIFAX — A 25-year-old man, Tarun Verma, has been charged in connection with a scam targeting seniors in Halifax.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) investigated five incidents between May and June 2025, in which seniors were contacted by individuals posing as family members claiming they needed bail money. The victims were then instructed by someone pretending to be an authority figure on how to hand over the funds.
On Nov. 7, Verma was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including:
Four counts of fraud under $5,000
One count of fraud over $5,000
Four counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
One count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Verma appeared in Halifax provincial court on Nov. 10 to face the charges. HRP confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Police warn the public to be cautious of emails or calls requesting money. Scammers often spoof phone numbers to make it appear as though they are contacting someone trusted. Residents are advised not to provide personal information via email, phone, or in person unless they can verify the legitimacy of the request.
