A Columbia man has been charged with the fatal shooting of a Stephens College student early Saturday morning.
Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson announced that Misael Covarrubias has been charged with Second-Degree Murder in connection with the death of Aiyanna Williams.
Covarrubias also faces three counts of Armed Criminal Action, two counts of First-Degree Assault, and one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, according to court documents.
Police said the shooting occurred around 1:40 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Broadway and Ninth Street in downtown Columbia. Covarrubias was reportedly involved in a verbal altercation with several individuals when he pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Three bystanders who were not involved in the dispute were struck by bullets — two women and one man. One of the victims, identified as Aiyanna Williams, later died from her injuries.
Covarrubias was arrested and remains held in the Boone County Jail without bond.
