After more than two decades on the run, a 45-year-old man convicted of murder was finally apprehended by the Greater Chennai Police.
The accused, D. Appandhas, a resident of Vengaivasal, had been absconding since being sentenced to life imprisonment in a 2001 murder case under the Pattinampakkam police limits. He was arrested on Thursday by a special team of the Organised Crime Cell (OCC) led by Inspector Pradeep.
Police said that the team had been tracking Appandhas for months through technical surveillance and undercover operations before locating him at Medavakkam.
The case traces back to 2001, when a man named Ragu was murdered. Appandhas, along with Dileep alias Dileepkumar and Senthil alias Kerala Senthil, had been arrested then with five others for their involvement in the killing.
Appandhas later managed to escape and had been living under a false identity for years before being captured. The police described the arrest as a major breakthrough in long-pending fugitive cases in the city.
