SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Springfield police have charged Christopher M. Coleman, 29, with first-degree murder following a shooting over the weekend.

Officers responded to the 400 block of E Washington St. at approximately 12:56 a.m. on November 1, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency medical care and transport to a hospital, the victim later died from his injuries.

Detectives identified Coleman as a suspect. He was taken into custody without incident in the 800 block of West North Grand Ave. on an unrelated charge and is currently held at the Sangamon County Jail.

On November 3, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney formally charged Coleman with first-degree murder. Authorities remind the public that charges are accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Springfield Police Department or Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers.
