CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A bicyclist was killed Monday evening in Marble, after being struck by a vehicle on Airport Road, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sergeant Christopher Wayne Cook.

Trooper E.J. Watson responded to the scene around 4:56 p.m. on Nov. 3, where the victim, 48-year-old Helen Runge of Marble, had been hit by a 2005 Jeep driven by 46-year-old Christopher Searcy, also of Marble.

Both the cyclist and the vehicle were traveling westbound at the time of the collision, Cook said.

A medical examiner arrived at the scene for an initial examination before Runge’s body was transported for an autopsy. Runge’s family has been notified of her death.

Following the investigation at the scene, Searcy was arrested and charged with:

Misdemeanor death by vehicle

Driving while license revoked

Searcy consented to a blood test, according to Cook.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash.
