by Ananya Mehta

The Barke police on Sunday arrested 28-year-old Farida Begum for allegedly cheating an electronics shop of Rs1.98 lakh by issuing fake cheques.

Farida, wife of Ramiz Raja and a resident of Muttur village, had purchased three high-end laptops from Laptop Bazar on Mahatma Gandhi Road through an acquaintance. The cheques she presented for payment later turned out to be invalid, prompting the shop owner Jayaram to lodge a complaint.

Police stated that Farida has a history of similar cheque frauds at jewellery and electronics stores. Cases against her are pending in Kavoor, Bajpe, Moodbidri, Mulky, Puttur, and Shirva police stations. She had also skipped bail in a case registered by Mulky police, for which a court had issued a warrant.

The accused was arrested by Investigating Officer Vinayak Toragal along with women police personnel under the supervision of Inspector Mohan Kottary and has been remanded to judicial custody until November 3.
