CALIFORNIA — A California judge has sentenced 51-year-old Lawyer Dushan McBride to life in prison for the 2017 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Rashanda Franklin, in Richmond.
Judge Mary Ann O’Malley handed McBride a total sentence of 95 years to life, including a determinate term of 20 years and 4 months, followed by an indeterminate term of 75 years to life.
McBride, then 43, ambushed Franklin, 30, in a church parking lot after weeks of stalking and harassment following the end of their two-year relationship.
Fearing for her safety, Franklin called 911 as she drove away with her children. Moments later, McBride cut off her car at 29th Street and Rheem Avenue, confronted her, and fatally shot her. The 911 recording captured Franklin pleading, “I’ve got my kids in the car,” before McBride responded, “I ain’t playing with you,” and opened fire.
In addition to first-degree murder, McBride was convicted of stalking, firing into an occupied vehicle, and using a firearm to cause death.
Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton said the case highlights the dangers of domestic violence and stalking.
“While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless act of violence, this sentence provides her family with a measure of justice,” Becton said, urging early intervention in domestic abuse cases.
