28-year-old Alexandra Krafchek Alfaro charged with 50+ offences, including possession of stolen property and identity theft
Waterloo Regional Police have arrested a woman as part of an ongoing vehicle theft investigation that has seen authorities lay over 50 charges and recover nine stolen vehicles.
Alexandra Krafchek Alfaro, 28, was apprehended on Monday night in connection with a large-scale fraud scheme, after previously being wanted for 25 charges related to stolen vehicles. Authorities have now added several new charges against her, including:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000 (two counts)
- Possession of an identity document
- Theft under $5,000
- Failure to Comply with Undertaking
The arrest occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Monday after police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. A male driver and Alfaro were seen in a grey Hyundai Elantra parked at a shopping plaza near Glasgow Street and Ira Needles Boulevard. Investigators soon discovered that the vehicle had been involved in a gas theft earlier that day in Woolwich Township.
When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped off, striking landscaping features and narrowly avoiding a marked police cruiser. Officers later located Alfaro inside a business at the plaza, where she was arrested.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are still searching for the male suspect involved in the incident, as well as the stolen vehicle. The case is part of a broader investigation into fraudulent vehicle rentals that began in March.
Fraudulent Vehicle Rental Scheme Uncovered
More than 50 charges have already been laid in connection with the case. Investigators say that a group of suspects from Waterloo Region had been using stolen identity documents to rent vehicles across southwestern Ontario—never returning the vehicles once in possession.
At least five individuals have been charged as part of the scheme, and police have connected the group to a series of thefts from used-car dealerships. Suspects allegedly visited dealerships, using stolen identities to secure test drives, only to drive off with the cars and never return.
The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to identify and apprehend additional suspects involved in the fraudulent vehicle rental and theft operation.
