In a major crackdown on cross-border narcotics trafficking, the Tarn Taran police arrested two drug smugglers and seized 16 kilograms of heroin along with a Swift car (PB08-DG-0128) on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Manpreet Singh (alias Mannu) from Chheena Maan Patti, Rayya, and Harpreet Singh (alias Happy) from Dhianpur, both in the Amritsar Rural area.

Acting on a tip-off, the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) team intercepted the suspects near Tarn Taran district while they were transporting the heroin consignment from Amritsar. The drugs were found hidden inside their vehicle during a thorough search.

According to Tarn Taran SSP Ravjot Grewal, initial investigations indicate that the accused maintained close contact with Pakistan-based smugglers and were involved in bringing heroin into India for distribution across Punjab.

The police have registered a case under Sections 21(C), 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act at the Sadar Tarn Taran police station. Both accused are scheduled to be produced in court.

Authorities are probing the precise route of the heroin smuggling and expect more arrests as investigations continue to dismantle the cross-border drug cartel.
