Morigaon, Assam – A man identified as Narayan Das, a resident of Burhagaon in Assam’s Morigaon district, has been arrested after a disturbing video showing him abusing a female Labrador dog went viral on social media.

The clip, reportedly captured using a hidden camera, shows the dog in visible distress. The video triggered widespread outrage online, prompting immediate calls for action by animal rights groups and citizens alike.

According to Morigaon Officer-in-Charge Bhaskar Barman, a case has been filed against Das under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Das is said to be a businessman and is alleged to have committed such acts over the last two and a half years.

The case gained momentum when multiple animal welfare NGOs stepped in to file an FIR on Monday. A raid at Das’s residence led to the rescue of two more dogs, who were subsequently sent for medical evaluation.

Prominent animal rights activist Debanjan Mukherjee, who had been investigating the matter quietly based on prior reports, played a key role in gathering evidence. “It took time to build a solid case, but once we had enough proof, the authorities acted,” he said.

Nandita Baruva, another activist involved in the rescue, stated: “When we reached the scene, we found the animals confined in poor conditions. We are relieved that the dogs are now safe.”

The incident has reignited debates around the need for stronger animal protection laws and better mechanisms for reporting abuse cases across India.
