Amber Nicole Pettway Charged in Birmingham Computer Tampering

Ex-city employee accused of unauthorized system access

by Amelia Crawford

A former City of Birmingham employee, Amber Nicole Pettway, 33, has been arrested and charged with felony computer tampering after allegedly accessing the city’s internal computer systems without proper authorization.

According to charging documents made public on Thursday, Pettway is accused of using the city’s internal email system on March 1 to either commit an unlawful act or to gain a benefit, defraud, or harm others—all without authority or by exceeding her authorized access.

While specific details of the alleged offense have not been disclosed, a city spokesperson confirmed that Pettway is no longer employed by the City of Birmingham. Her LinkedIn profile previously listed her role as a network systems administrator for the city.

Pettway was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Wednesday afternoon and released several hours later after posting $15,000 bond.

As of now, court records do not list an attorney representing Pettway.
