OSHAWA, Ont. – A 23-year-old man from Oshawa, Alex Noah Pekala, has been arrested and charged after allegedly defrauding victims out of more than $2.5 million through an elaborate investment scam.
The Durham Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit launched an investigation in June 2024 after two victims reported that Pekala posed as a financial trader, promising guaranteed high returns via a platform called ‘Interactive Brokers.’
Between March 2023 and March 2024, police say Pekala convinced victims to transfer large sums of money under the pretense of investing it. Victims were instructed to open accounts with Interactive Brokers, where Pekala maintained sole control over trading.
To build trust, police allege Pekala showcased luxury vehicles and provided forged investment return statements, creating the illusion of successful trading and wealth.
Investigators say the funds were not invested but instead used to support his extravagant lifestyle, including the purchase of high-end items.
On September 21, police arrested Pekala and charged him with:
Two counts of fraud over $5,000
He is currently being held for a bail hearing. The charges have not been proven in court, and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with additional information or who may have been victimized is urged to contact Durham Regional Police.
