In a major drug bust, the Assam Police arrested a suspected drug trafficker from Bihar and seized heroin worth over Rs3.11 crore on the outskirts of Silchar.
Superintendent of Police (Cachar) Numal Mahatta stated that based on credible intelligence, police conducted an operation near the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Ramnagar on Thursday and apprehended Rameshwar Ray, 36, a native of Hajipur, Bihar.
Upon searching Ray, the police recovered 50 soap cases filled with heroin, totaling 622 grams. The operation was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses, ensuring legal transparency.
SP Mahatta confirmed that the estimated market value of the drugs is Rs3.11 crore and that a detailed investigation is underway to trace the drug supply chain.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the efforts of Assam Police in a social media post, commending the department’s vigilance and commitment in the fight against narcotics.
The arrest highlights growing concerns over interstate drug trafficking and the use of public transport terminals for smuggling illegal substances.
