A Filipino domestic helper, 36-year-old Kasiteluo, was sentenced to two months in jail for stealing over $4,000 worth of foreign currency and jewellery from her employer’s safe, according to Shin Min Daily News.
Kasiteluo faced two theft charges, pleading guilty to one on September 20, while the other was considered during sentencing. The judge also ordered her to pay $1,871.34 in compensation to her employer.
Court documents show Kasiteluo started working in 2023 at a condominium along West Coast Road, performing cooking and household chores for a family of four.
On August 12, the employer, aged 38, discovered cash and jewellery missing from the safe and filed a police report. Investigations revealed Kasiteluo stole from the safe at least five times between March and August. Stolen items included a gold pendant, a gold sceptre, RMB 5,900 (approx. S$1,065), and €930 (approx. S$1,396), totaling about $4,346.
Kasiteluo admitted she was tempted to steal as the safe was often left open in an unlocked cabinet. She kept the stolen goods in a guest room wardrobe. She later pawned the jewellery and sent the cash proceeds, along with the stolen currency, to her husband for medical treatment and to support their two children.
She was arrested on August 18 and charged two days later. Kasiteluo has been in remand since.
