NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — A Chapin man is facing multiple felony charges after a deadly shooting and kidnapping incident last week in Newberry.

David R. Clark, 53, was arrested and booked into the Newberry County Detention Center in connection with the incident, according to Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman.

Clark is charged with murder, two counts of kidnapping, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes, and unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm.

Police responded Friday morning to a report of a shooting and kidnapping at the College Park Apartments. After forcing entry into the home, officers discovered a man dead from a gunshot wound.

The victim was later identified by Coroner Laura Kneece as 53-year-old Dexter Tobias Gary Sr.

Authorities say a woman and a child were abducted from the scene and forced into a vehicle. With assistance from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office, the victims were located safely in Chapin and returned to Newberry.

Chief Goodman emphasized that the case spanned multiple counties, and he credited the cooperation of several agencies, including the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, SLED, and Lexington County investigators, for the swift resolution.
