SHREVEPORT, La. — Shreveport police arrested 30-year-old Jacobi Hughes Saturday morning after a violent attack on his girlfriend, Kailisa Franklin, 27, which ended in her death.
This is not Hughes’ first run-in with the law regarding abuse. Police say Hughes has been arrested eight times, with six of those arrests related to domestic violence.
Neighbors reported no unusual activity Friday night at the DeSoto Street home where Hughes lived with his mother. However, police descended on the residence early Saturday morning.
Officers discovered Franklin severely beaten in a back room. She was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries.
“There appeared to have been a significant struggle inside the residence. Items were displaced and broken, and it looked like the suspect tried to cover his tracks,” said Cpl. Chris Bordelon, SPD Public Information Officer.
Hughes was charged with second-degree murder, child endangerment, and domestic abuse battery.
Previously, Hughes pleaded guilty in 2021 to negligent injuring in Caddo District Court after causing bruises on one of his young children, though his jail sentence was suspended.
Franklin’s death marks the ninth domestic violence-related homicide in Shreveport this year. Police note that nearly one-third of the city’s 26 homicides in 2025 are linked to domestic abuse.
