Roger Neil Schmidt Appears in Court for 1984 Murder Cold Case

Preliminary hearing delayed in Shasta County murder case

REDDING, Calif. — The suspect in a 1984 cold case murder has made a court appearance in Shasta County Superior Court.

Roger Neil Schmidt, who was arrested in July in Tucson, Arizona, is charged with the murder of 18-year-old Terry Arndt on a remote road in Burney, along with the sexual assault of another 18-year-old woman who was with Arndt at the time of the attack.

During Thursday’s court session, both prosecuting and defense attorneys agreed to postpone the preliminary hearing until September 29. The delay is due to the need to review over 20,000 pages of documents tied to the investigation.

The case was reopened after DNA test results connected Schmidt to the crime, leading to his arrest nearly four decades after the incident.
